09 Dec Vaping, what you need to know
Over the years there have been many articles, so called research and scientific articles about vaping, its benefits and concerns which has made it difficult to know what the truth is.
Here are some of the dangers…
The misconception that vaping is safer than smoking is a good place to start because this is one of the reasons many of my clients switch from cigarettes to vapes because they believe it’s a safer alternative. But findings have challenged this as it was found that both nicotine and non nicotine vapes impair vascular function with nicotine vapes causing more substantial reductions.
Vaping damages blood vessel function, even in the absence of nicotine, by reducing blood flow velocity in the femoral artery and decreasing venous oxygen saturation, which suggests impaired lung oxygen intake.
E-cigarette or vaping product use is associated with lung injury (EVALI) a severe respiratory condition. It’s characterized by symptoms such as shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, and gastrointestinal issues like nausea and vomiting, seizures, burns, throat and mouth issues, cancer chronic bronchitis, depression and anxiety.
The presence of toxic chemicals such as lead, nickel and formaldehyde, cadmium, propylene glycol and acetaldehyde in e-cigarette vapor causes acute lung injury and systemic effects on multiple organs.
Many vapers get into the habit of having their vape permanently in their hand and using it far more than they would a cigarette. A statistic I found from the US states that by February 2020 over 2800 people have been hospitalised with lung issues including 68 deaths. In fact there have been more studies by the Department of Environmental Medicine, University of Rochester Medical Centre, New York found that e-cigarette aerosols and copper nano-particle contaminants induce mitochondrial stress and promote DNA fragmentation in lung fibroblasts. A study by the BMA also concluded serious issues. Vaping is not safe and not safer than smoking. It merely presents different health risks.
